Middle Park Suburb Profile
One of Melbourne’s suburbs close to the Central Business District is Middle Park. With a population of 4,058, this inner suburb is situated four kilometers south of the CBD and belongs to the local government area of the City of Port Philip.
The suburb was named as such because of its location between Port Philip Bay and Albert Park Lake.
Middle Park is part of a heritage-conservation area and features some of Melbourne’s well preserved terrace homes with Victorian architectural design. Many terrace homes are located along Canterbury Road and Armstrong Street which is the main shopping street.
Famous Landmarks
This suburb also has several important landmarks. One is the Middle Park Hotel, a large Victorian hotel situated on the corner of Canterbury Road and Armstrong Street. It was built in 1889 with wrought-iron lacework.
The hotel has undergone several renovations since then. In the 1950s, new doors were added, the windows were bricked up while the decorative urns were removed.
In 2001, another refurbishment took place afterwhich the establishment’s name was changed to Gunn Island Hotel. The name was derived from an island near Albert Park Lake.
Other landmarks in the area are the Carmelite Roman Catholic Church, Middle Park Primary School and Jackson’s on Middle Park, a bed and breakfast accommodation.
