You’ve FINALLY bought the home of your dreams… so now you can relax, right? Well, not quite. Moving is the next big job, and if you’re soon to move house with a young family you might need to start planning that move asap.

Don’t worry, we have some tips and tricks that will help you and the kids move to a new home without too much drama.

The Importance of Planning

If possible, plan your move for the least busy period in your kids’ schedules, when they don’t have important school or after-school events on the calendar.

Make two lists: a pre-move list and a moving day list – with child-related tasks colour-coded so nothing is missed.

To reduce stress on your kids, plan regular chats to keep them updated on what is happening at an appropriate level for their age. Assigning older children jobs such as packing their stuff is also a good idea.

Consider using a free online service such as Move Me In or My Connect to arrange utility service connections quickly and easily, giving you more time for parenting.

Take Time to Prepare

Prepare your kids for the move by exploring your new neighbourhood in the weeks before you move, and talking to them about their new home. Talk to them about what will change (if anything) in their lives when you relocate.

Put a timeline of moving house events on the fridge so everyone can stay up to date on what is happening and when.

Moving Day

The way you handle the kids on moving day will depend on their age. Young children may need an older sibling, relative or friend to take them out for the day, or supervise them closely at home.

Assign suitable moving day jobs to older children, such as looking after the pets, unpacking boxes, removing used packing materials and stacking empty boxes, or putting food items away in the fridge.

When moving into a new home, set up the kids’ bedrooms as a first priority. Re-establish their normal routines as quickly as possible to minimise anxiety.

Because change can be difficult for some children to cope with, preparing them well in advance and keeping them informed are the secrets to moving with minimum drama. Good luck!
