Albert Park Suburb Profile
Albert Park is one of Melbourne’s inner suburbs situated three kilometers south of the CBD. A part of the City of Port Philip with a population of 6,215 as of 2016, the area boasts of wide and leafy streets, heritage buildings, terraced and semi-detached homes in the Edwardian and Victorian era, al fresco cafes and parks.
Originally, the area was mostly swamps and lagoons and the first inhabitants some 40,000 years ago were the Indigenous Australians. The main park was named after Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria in 1864. During that time, Albert Park was a military camp and used as a garbage dump as well as for recreation.
Albert Park can be reached by tram. Some routes that service the area are the tram route 1, 12 and 96. Bus services are also available while bicycle lanes are in place notably along the beach and Canterbury roads.
Recreation
The main public park in the area is a popular place for cycling, dog walking, jogging and family picnics while the Albert Park Lake is noted for its sailing and rowing activities. Inside the park, there is also the St Vincent Gardens which features important mature tree specimens and is registered with the National Trust.
At the lake, people can enjoy boat watching or learn how to sale at the Albert Park Yacht Club. The club offers sailing courses for both adults and juniors.
Art lovers can also visit the Gasworks Arts Park featuring multiple sculpture studios. It organizes visual and performing arts programs including exhibitions, festivals, kids shows and a circus showdown and has a high quality theatre for performances.
Another place for recreation in Albert Park is its beach. In the area are some grand buildings including the Victoria Hotel, terraced homes, the Kerferd Kiosk and Kerferd Pier.
Sports Facilities
Albert Park also has a number of facilites for the sports enthusiasts. A golf driving range, gymnasium and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre are in place.
The area has also been home to the famous motor racing event called the Formula One Australian Grand Prix since 1996.
