Ashburton Suburb Profile
Ashburton is a small suburb of Melbourne with a population of 7,715 as of 2016. The area is situated 12 kilometers southeast of the CBD and is part of the City of Boroondara.
The suburb was established after the war and was given the name Ashburton by a former local councilor who had lived in Ireland’s Ashburton Terrace, Cork.
Prior to the residential development, the area was well known for its Ashburton forest which became a site of picnics. Housing development commenced after Melbourne’s metropolitan expansion and increased car ownership. Those who live here now are families with kids, professionals, singles, retirees and students.
Housing
In terms of housing, while old commission homes were common in the past, they are now being replace by family homes and townhouses. Houses were more affordable back then but prices have increased since the area became a more up-market.
A school named Solway opened in the suburb in 1950. It was named as such after the Solway post office near Solway Street opened in 1956.
Recreation
Among Ashburton’s features are its shopping strip along High Street near the railway station, the Gardineers Creek, the Ashburton Park and Warner and Markham Reserve and the Malvern Valley golf course.
The Markham Reserve is one of Melbourne’s best parks in the eastern side. It boasts of a playground, sportgrounds, a garden, picnic spots and an area for scooters, skaters and skateboard riders with a safety fence.
The shopping strip is a busy center with boutique cafes where you can enjoy your coffee. If you want to live in the big city but with a country town ambiance, this suburb is ideal.
