Blackburn Suburb Profile
The suburb of Blackburn is situated 17 kilometers east of the CBD. With a population of 12,796 as of 2011, it is covered under the local government area of the City of Whitehorse.
The first settlers in the area were the Europeans in the 1840s. Initially, orchards and small farms were built there. Among the first structures constructed in the place were the Traveller’s Rest Hotel in 1861 and the Blackburn Creek Post Office in 1876.
By the 1880s, brickworks and quarries were established in the area. Other facilities that were eventually built there were the Blackburn railway station in 1882 and the primary school in 1889.
Houses were constructed much later after the Second World War. The area was subdivided earlier but development was rather slow. Many homes there today still date back to the 1950s and 1960s and made of brick and timber.
Blackburn is rich in history after having been developed around the artificial Blackburn Lake in 1889. The lake is located in the middle of the what is now known as the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. In the later part of the 19th century, the place was a well known day trip destination and today, its village atmosphere remains due to the implementation of strict planning controls around the area.
The suburb is also known for its leafy streets and native birds (kookaburras, ducks and parrots) found at the popular Blackburn Lake. With its pleasant atmosphere and natural environment, Blackburn is ideal for families.
Facilities
Blackburn has no major shopping center but there’s one in Box Hill which is two train stops away. Forest Hill is also nearby and can be reached by bus.
The suburb has two railway stations – Laburnum and Blackburn, on the Belgrace and Lilydale lines.
Recreation areas are also present. Three bushland parks are in the area such as the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, Blackburn Creeklands park, Gardiners Creek and the Cootamundra Walk. The Blackburn Creeklands park feature the Blacks Walk, Kalang Park and Furness Park.
Sports Clubs
Various sports clubs exist in Blackburn. The suburb has its own Australian Rules football team called The Blackburn Panthers’.
For cricket, several clubs are in place. These are the Blackburn Cricket, Blackburn North Cricket, Blackburn South Cricket and the Laburnum Cricket Club.
Other clubs in the suburb are the Blackburn Soccer, Blackburn North Baptist Covver, Blackburn South Netball, St. Thomas Netball, Laburnum Netball, Blackburn Burners Netball, Blackburn Tennis and the Blackburn Vikings (basketball). The teams under Vikings play in the Victorian Junior Basketball League and the BigV Competition.
Schools
Families with school children wishing to live in Blackburn will not have a hard time finding a school as there are six available. These are the Laburnum Primary School, Blackburn Primary School, Blackburn Lake Primary School, Old Orchard Primary School, St. Thomas The Apostle Primary School and the Blackburn High School.
