Bulleen Suburb Profile
Bulleen is another suburb in Melbourne situated 13 kilometers northeast of the CBD. With a population of 10,868 as of 2011, the area belongs to the City of Manningham local government.
The suburb’s name was derived from an area nearby called Bolin Bolin Billabong. Billabong is a lake and the term buln-buln originally means lyrebird.
Early settlement
The Manna Gum people were the early settlers in the billabongs. They stayed there for 5,000 years. As the largest lake or billabong, Bolin was an important ritual meeting place for the aborigines during the olden days. It is also there or on the hills where the corroborees took place.
By 1841, a Sydney solicitor named Frederic Unwin bought 5,120 acres of land in the area including the present Bulleen suburb. The price per acre then was one pound.
One of the first structures built in the area in 1952 was the Bulleen post office. A Bulleen South office was opened in 1959.
Commercial Area
The main commercial area in the suburb is the Bulleen Plaza. This shopping complex located on Manninham Road houses a library, post office, medical centre, business centre and various cafes and specialty shops. A Coles supermarket is also available there.
Schools
Several educational institutions are available in Bulleen. These are the St. Clement of Rome, a Catholic primary school and Marcellin College, a Catholic secondary school. Families with special children residing in the suburb can also enroll their kids at the Bulleen Special School.
Public Transport
Buses are the only means of public transportation servicing Bulleen. Many run to the Melbourne CBD passing through bus lanes on the Eastern Freeway and Hoddle Street. The Ventura Bus Lines is the main operator of bus routes in Bulleen.
