The Cheltenham suburb in Melbourne is situated 19 kilometers south-east of the central business district. Part of the Kingston City local government area, it has a population of 20,292 as of 2011.
The Cheltenham area dates back to 1852 when it was still part of the estates in the Moorabbin parish developed by Josiah Holloway. Formerly named Acre Village, lots were sold between the years 1853 and 1854. It was during that time that the township was given the name Cheltenham.
By 1857, the post office opened but it was only in the 1880s when the township experienced major deveopment. The Cheltenham park followed in 1872 and was used for cricket and other recreational activities.

Residential development in the suburb began in the 1940s and went on until the 1980s. By 1993, the suburb’s landmark Nepean Highway office tower with severn stories was constructed. Initially, the City of Kingston leased space in the building to use as its main office but eventually, it purchased the structure in 2010.
Shopping Centers
One of Cheltenham’s oldest shopping centers is Westfield Southland. Situated in the northern part of the suburb, it was opened in 1968 and now has 416 stores including three department stores, three discount department stores, three supermarkets and 16 cinemas.
Many other retail shops have opened in the suburb. Direct Factory Outlets Moorabbin is a large shopping complex featuring 135 stores mostly fashion outlets.
Other shopping areas include the Kingston Central Plaza which opened in 2008 and the Cheltenham Shopping center located on Charman Road.
Schools
Families with kids won’t have a problem living in the suburb as schools are in place. There are five primary schools and one high school in Cheltenham. These are the Cheltenham Primary School, East Primary School, Le Page Primary School, Kingston Health Primary School, Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Primary School and the Cheltenham Secondary College.
Sports Facilities
Sports facilities are also available in the suburb. Several golf courses are in place such as the Cheltenham Golf Club, Sandringham Municipal Golf Links and the Victoria Golf Club.
The suburb is also home to Football and Crickets Clubs based in Weatherall Road. The Cricket Club dates back to 1872.
Other sports that are played in Cheltenham include football, lawn bowls, baseball and swimming.
