Elsternwick Suburb Profile
Elsternwick is located 9km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD and is part of the City of Glen Eira local government area.
Bounded by the Nepean Highway, Elster Avenue, Kooyong Road, Glen Eira Road, and Hotham Street (the continuation of Williams Road), the suburb took its name from the largest property in the district: Charles Ebden’s house Elster. The area was previously known as Red Bluff. The creek nearby became known as the Elster Creek; and, when a village grew up on the creek, the Anglo-Saxon suffix ‘wick’, meaning village, was added.
There are a variety of cafes and restaurants on Glen Huntly Road and the 2017 season of The Block was filmed on Regent Street.
Once located in Elsternwick, the Elsternwick Primary School is now part of the suburb of Brighton and consequently, Elsternwick no longer has any government schools. However, Leibler Yavneh College, St Joseph’s PS and Wesley Colleage are located within the suburb.
