Fawkner Suburb Profile
The suburb of Fawkner is located 12 kilometers from the CBD. A part of the City of Moreland and the City of Hume, it has a population of 14,043 as of the 2016 census. Originally, it was part of the City of Broadmeadows.
The area experienced a population boom after the Second World War attracting immigrants from around the globe. The Italians comprise a significant portion of the population with 13.1 percent while other nationalities residing in the suburb came from Pakistan and Iraq.
The suburb’s name was taken from Melbourne’s pioneer settler, John Pascoe Fawkner. During the time of the original settlers, the area was still a windy place with few trees and few unfinished shacks.
Some 35 houses existed in the area in 1910 while electricity arrived in the suburb by 1920 courtesy of the City of Coburg Electricity Supply Department. It was also during that time when returned soldiers settled in Fawkner. Blocks are bigger and the houses are better quality. They are mostly made from cream brick veneers, with some weatherboards, on 530-700 square metres.
The post-World War II period saw a major development in the suburb. In 1949, the Housing Commission built the first public housing while the 1960s saw the establishment of the Moomba Park Estate.
Commercial Area
Fawkner’s main shopping strips are the Bonwick Streeet and the one bordering Sydney Road. A wide range of shops including restaurants and cafes and some stores are situated on Bonwick Street.
Schools
Two government primary schools are in place in the suburb – the Fawkner Primary and Moomba Park Primary. In addition, two Catholic primary schools were also built – St. Matthew’s PS and St. Mark’s PS.
There are also two colleges in the area – Fawkner Secondary College built in 1956 and the Islamic college, Darul Ulum College of Victoria built in 1997.
Public Transport
Fawkner can be reached via tram and bus. The Gowrie and Fawkner on the Upfield railway line transport passengers to the Melbourne CBD and the Northland Shopping Centre.
The Coburg North – Campbellfield (K-Mart) bus (route no 530) serves Fawkner and neighboring suburbs while the The Upfield Bike Path, Merri Creek Trail and the Western Ring Road Trail provide facilities can be used by commuting cyclists.
Nature Reserves
Those who love to stroll close to nature can also do so in Fawkner. The suburb has three major reserves such as the Charles Mutton Reserve, home ground for the Northern Saints; Moomba Park, home ground for Moreland United; and CB Smith Reserve, home ground for the Fawkner Blues Soccer Club.
