With a major portion of the suburb part of the City of Merri-bek local government area, Fawkner is located 12km north of Melbourne’s CBD, bounded by Merri Creek on the east, Sydney Road and the Upfield railway line on the west, the Western Ring Road on the north and Boundary Road on the south separating the suburb from Coburg North. The smaller portion within the City of Hume extends north to Camp Road and Mahoneys Road.
The area was originally called and was part of Box Forest, named by Melbourne settler pioneer, John Pascoe Fawkner.
Shopping strips can be found in the commercial areas such as Sydney Road and Bonwick Street. There is also a small precinct boasting a grocery store and small restaurants on Major Road.
There are local bus routes that service Fawkner, such as 530, 531 and 902. Fawkner is served by Gowrie railway station, which is located on the Upfield line. If you prefer your own method of transport to commute, there are several cycling tracks within the suburb, including Merri Creek Trail, Western Ring Road Trail and Upfield Bike Path.
