Flemington Suburb Profile
Another inner suburb of Melbourne is Flemington, situated 4 kilometers from the CBD between the Maribyrnong River and the Moonee Ponds Creek. It has a population of 7,719 as of 2016 and is part of the cities of Melbourne and Moonee Valley.
Named after the Flemington Estate in Scotland, the area features a mix of housing. These include weatherboard cottages, brick single-storey houses and double-storey houses. Most have the Victorian architectural style while some are in Edwardian and Federation style. Many immigrants from Europe settled in the place in the 1950s.
Multiple public housing estates are also in place. The largest is the Holland Court Housing Commission of Victoria estate which has towers with 20 storeys and apartment homes with three to four storeys.
The suburb is home to the Flemington Racecourse where the Melbourne Cup Thoroughbred horse race has been taking place since 1861. The annual Melbourne Cup organized by the Victoria Racing Club is held every November and is a public holiday in Victoria.
Commercial Area
The main commercial center is on Racecourse road. More shops and cafes are on Pin Oak Crescent.
Public Transport
Flemington can be reached by train, bus or tram. Two railway stations serve the area – Newmarket and Flemington Bridge.
Those who want to take the tram can take tram routes 57 and 59.
Those who prefer the bus can take bus routes 404, 472 and 942.
