Glen Huntly Suburb Profile
Glen Huntly is part of the City of Glen Eira and is situated 11 kilometers south-east of the Central Business District. With a population of 5,040 as of 2016, this small suburb’s name was taken from a ship that arrived in Port Philip in 1840. The ship then had 157 passengers composed of new immigrants and skilled manual workers heading for Melbourne.
In 1907, the Clerk’s Home Estate was established. More housing estates were marketed in the next 15 years to accommodate the growing population in the suburb.
By 1920s, many people have settled in the area and a shopping strip was in place along the Glen Huntly Road tramline.
Glen Huntly has easy access to shops, local restaurants and amenities. It is also walking distance to Monash University. Also close by is the Caulfield racecourse.
Two athletic clubs have been formed in the area. The Glen Huntly Amateur Athletic Club formed in the early 1920s had several members who competed in Commonwealth and Olympic Game. After nine years, the Glen Huntly Women’s Amateur Athletic Club was formed.
The suburb is accessible by public transport. It is served by trams particularly route 67 and the Glenhuntly railway station.
A velodrome and other cycle paths are available for cyclists.
Residents of Glen Huntly are a mix of pure Australians, Chinese, South Africans, English, Ukrainians and Indians.
