Glen Iris Suburb Profile
The suburb of Glen Iris in Melbourne, Victoria is part of the Cities of Boroondara and Stonnington. Situated 10 kilometers south-east of the CBD, it has a population of nearly 25,000 as of 2011 and is considered the demographic center of Melbourne. It is well known among professionals, families and retirees.
Glen Iris is popular for its parks, gardens, nature reserves, leafy streets , historical architecture, shopping areas and the Gardiners Creek waterway.
The suburb took its name from the ship called Iris that arrived in Melbourne in 1850. The ship was manned by Captain Thomas Henderson who eventually bought a property near Gardiners Creek and High Street. When it was advertised for sale two years after, it was referred to as Glen Iris.
Structures in Place
The first structures built in the area were the Wesleyan church in 1865 and the present Glen Iris Primary School in 1871. The post office was established in 1890.
Several educational institutions are in place in Glen Iris. They range from the government to independent schools. These include the Camberwell South Primary School, St Cecilia’s and St Roch’s Catholic primary schools, Sacre Coeur School, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School and the Caulfield Grammar School.
Residents of the suburb do not have to go far to enjoy some leisure activities. Right within Glen Iris are recreational and sporting facilities for families to enjoy. Those who want to go swimming can visit the Harold Holt Swim Centre while lovers of bowling can check out the Burwood District Bowls Club. There’s also a BMX track at Hill’n’Dale Park while those who run can do their favorite activity at the Hartwtell Sports Ground, Ferndale Park and the T.H. King Oval.
Housing
Many houses in Glen Iris were built after the war showcasing 50’s and 60’s brick homes considered to be the most sought after properties. They also include art deco apartments in apartment blocks, town houses as well as contemporary family homes.
More housing developments have also been noted in recent years.
