Kensington Suburb Profile
Close to the CBD around 4 kilometers away is the inner suburb of Kensington. It has a population of 10,812 as of 2016 and is part of the City of Melbourne.
The suburb is popular for its tree lined streets, cafes and diverse architecture with some hilly areas. Its name was taken after Kensington in London. In the past, the area had major abbatoirs and livestock saleyards, an army ordnance depot and a number of factories.
History
The original settlers in the suburb were the Wurundjeri people who were mostly hunters and gatherers. Kensington then was still part of the City of Essendon but it later separated in 1882. By 1905, it was amalgamated with the City of Melbourne.
In 1955, a major railway yard was opened adjacent to Dynon Road. The earlier yards built during the Second World War were meant to increase the capacity of railway freight. Through time, they were extended and upgraded.
Housing
Housing in the suburb is a mixed of semi-detached row or terrace houses, public housing and apartments. It is estimated that 4,900 private homes exist in Kensington with 91.6 percent of them occupied as of the 2016 census.
There are still well preserved timber and brick terraces featuring Victorian and Edwardian architecture and most can be found on the streets of Ormond, McCracken, Rankins, Bellair, Lambeth and Parsons.
Parks
Kensington has a number of parks and open spaces for its residents to enjoy. J.J. Holland is the major park situated adjacent to the South Kensington railway station. Another major one exists on the Maribyrnong River frontage while a smaller open space known as Women’s Peace Park is located west of Epson Road.
Still another park was built by the Melbourne City Council in 2016 to provide more green space in the suburb.
Education
Currently, three schools are in place in the area. The Kensington Primary School was built in 1881 by Alfred Deakin while the Holy Rosary Catholic primary school was opened in 1916. Kensington Community High School opened later in 1975.
Public Transport
There are three train stations that service the suburb. These are the Kensington station, South Kensington and Tram route 57.
Buses are also available. These are bus routes 402 and 404.
