Montmorency Suburb Profile
Montmorency is one of Melbourne’s suburbs situated 18 kilometers northeast of the CBD. With a population of 8,759 as of 2011, the suburb is part of the local government area of the City of Banyule.
The area’s name was taken from a local farm known as Montmorency Estate which was actually named after a town in France specifically in Vald’Oise. Today the suburb is also popularly called Monty.
History
The Montmorency Estate was established in the 1840s and was owned by the first Premier of New South Wales, merchant Stuart Alexander Donaldson. The township was established when buildings were gradually set up in the area. These include the Presbyterian church in 1917, the Montmorency Primary School in 1922, the Montmorency station and the post office in 1923.
In the 1920s, the suburb consisted mostly of dairy and poultry farms in addition to orchards. The population then was only 200 and that already includes the weekenders.
By the 1950s after the Second World War, Montmorency’s population rose to 600 and more facilities were constructed. These were the public hall, sports ground, a tennis court and two churches.
Social Life
Montmorency’s advantages are its easy access to the city and affordable properties providing similar lifestyle options to city living.
Residents here can enjoy varied social opportunities. Meet locals in the nearby restaurants and bars as most often choose to stay in the suburb even at night time rather than travel to the city.
The main commercial area is at Were Street where some national chain stores and franchises can be found. A second business precinct is on Grand Boulevard where small offices are situated. The Mountain View Road, on the other hand, features a lawn bowls club and a scout hall.
Facilities
Educational institutions are in place in Montmorency. These are the primary schools of Montmorency, Montmorency South and Saint Francis Xavier, all with modern facilities. The Montmorency Secondary College established in 1969 is also in place.
Leisure time in the suburb can be enjoyed at the hilly parklands near the Plenty River and a number of parks notably in the southeast section.
Transportation
The suburb has easy access to the city center as it is close to the local train station. This makes it convenienet for residents who want to travel to large sporting and entertainment events. Montmorency has developed transport infrastructure.
Buses also service the suburb such as the Melbourne 293, 901 and 513 bus routes. There’s also the Montmorency Station that lies on the Hurstbridge Line.
