Burwood Suburb Profile
The suburb of Burwood is situated 14 kilometers east of the CBD and has a population of 15,019 as of 2016. It is covered under the local government areas of the cities of Monash and Whitehorse.
The suburb’s name was taken from a house build by Sir James Palmer located in Hawthorn West in 1852. It was originally known as Ballyshanassy in 1858 but was later changed to Norwood and eventually to Burwood in 1879.
By 1904 when the suburb had 600 inhabitants, development was in place with a post office, two hotels, a savings bank and several churches in the area. Farms and market gardens also existed including Alber’s Daffodil Farm which is now the site of the current Deakin University’s Burwood campus.
Infrastructures
Burwood is known for its large buildings particularly those located along the Burwood Highway at Deakin University. A multi-storey building called BC is also in place adjacent to the Burwood highway.
In terms of commercial establishments, a Burwood shopping centre is available at the intersection of Burwood highway and Warrigal road. There is also another shopping strip at Bennettswood.
Retirement Villages
Retirees are most welcome in Burwood. Proof of this are the two retirement villages in place. These are the Fountain Court and Elizabeth Gardens on Warrigal Road but on different streets.
Educational Institutions
Being in the school zone, Burwood is ideal for families with children. Several public and private schools are in the area. The private schools include Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Emmaus College – Year 9 Campus, Mount Scopus Memorial College – Gandel Campus, St Scholastica’s Primary School, and St Benedicts Parish School. The public schools include Wattle Park Primary School and
St Benedicts Primary School. The Deakin University also has a campus in the suburb.
Public Transportation
Burwood can be accessed via the Warrigal Road, Elgar Road, Station Street and Middleborough Road in the north-south sections. The east-west roads, on the other hand, include the Riversdale Road, Burwood Highway and Highbury Road.
In terms of public transporation, two tram routes serve the suburb. Route 70 travels from Waterfront City Docklands to Wattle Park while Route 75 travels from Etihad Stadium Docklands to Vermont South.
