Oak Park Suburb Profile
Oak Park is one of Melbourne’s suburbs located 11 kilometers north of the CBD. It has a population of 6,205 as of 2016 and is part of the City of Moreland.
Formerly a part of the John Pascoe Fawkner estate, the area was slowly developed and housing were constructed in the 1950s. From then on, more development took place such as infrastructures and shopping districts.
Oak Park today boasts of various facilities including a shopping center on Winifred Street, a sports centre which is home to the Oak Park Football Club and the Therry Penola Football Club and a Moonee Ponds trail for cyclists. Two nature reserves including parks are also in place along the Moonee Ponds Creek. Cafes and pubs in Pascoe Vale are also within walking distance.
Educational Institutions
Two schools are available in Oak Park. The Oak Park Primary School is a government education facility while the Saint Frances de Sales School is a private one.
Housing
In terms of housing, 71 percent are owned while 29 percent are rented. Families and singles make up the huge portion of the population.
Family homes that date back to the 1960s and the 1970s make up the original housing stock in the suburb. These are mostly made from weatherboard and brick.
Many homes have undergone renovation to keep pace with today’s expected standards. Quality homes are also available on larger blocks.
Public Transport
Oak Park can be accessed via the freeways and public transportation particularly the Oak Park railway station. This station is on the Cragieburn railway line.
