Ormond Suburb Profile
Situated 12 kilomters south-east of CBD, the suburb of Ormond is a small community with a population of 7,711 as of 2011. It belongs to the local government area of the City of Glen Eira.
Early Beginnings
One of the first structures put up in Ormond was the post office back in January 1870. But it closed in 1884 and was reopened twice after that, in 1907 and 1951.
A timber mill owned by Abraham Lewis also started operating in the area in 1905. Still known then as the market garden estates of Ormond, the area was in the stage of development at that time with the surrounding subdivision starting to grow. The business continues to operate until now manufacturing mouldings of timber courtesy of Abraham’s descendants who have carried on the original style of design handshaped by Abraham Lewis.
Present State
Currently, the suburb is home to plenty of churches, parks and sports clubs such as the Ormond Amateur Football Club, Ormond Tennis Club and Ormond Cricket Club. Schools are also available such as the Kilvington Grammar School, the Wilsonian Institute and St. Kevin’s Primary School.
The North Road is considered the main shopping strip. Other shopping spots nearby are in Carnegie and Bentleigh.
Ormond also has several restaurants that offer different styles. This fact is a reflection of the multiculturalism that exists in Melbourne.
The suburb can easily be reached by public transport. The Ormond railway station services the area on the Frankston line.
