Parkdale Suburb Profile
Parkdale is part of the City of Kingston and is situated 23 kilometers south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. Its population stands at 11,185 as of 2011.
Founded in 1920, this beach-side suburb of Parkdale was named after William Parker, an early homesteader in the area. It was during the time when engineers were constructing a railway station along some bayside shops. The first structure that opened was the Parkdale Post Office in 1921.
The sandy beach near the suburb is what makes Parkdale attractive. Considered the best beach in the area, it has easy access from the street.
A small shopping village is also in place with plenty of cafes and dining spots. There are also supermarkets, specialty shops and pubs in the area.
Demographics
Majority or 75.6 percent of people living in the suburb were born in Australia. Migrant residents include those coming from the U.K., New Zealand, Greece, Italy, China and India.
In terms of ancestry, most residents are of English descent. Other ancestries listed during the 2011 census include Irish, Scottish, Italian, German, Greek and Chinese.
Schools
Families with schoolchildren will be disappointed in Parkdale as it has several educational institutions in place. These include the Parkdale Primary School, Parktone Primary School, St. John Vianney’s Primary School and Parkdale Secondary College.
Transportation
Parkdale is accessible by public transport. A number of Metlink buses service the area. A train line on the Frankstone Line of the Parkdale Station is also servicing the suburb.
