An inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Parkville has a population of 7,409 as of 2016. It is situated three kilometers north of the CBD and is part of the Cities of Melbourne and Moreland.
Parkville is known as a center of education, research and healthcare. It is here where the University of Melbourne and Monash University can be found. The suburb is also popular for its Royal Park where the Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens exists. It spans 181 hectares making it the largest inner city park of Melbourne. The athlete’s village for the 2006 Commonwealth Games can also be found here. More than 1,000 homes are now in place with 20 percent allocated to social housing.
Housing
Housing in the suburb has a high median price owing to its proximity to the city centre and parkland. Dwellings here range from terrace houses, timber cottages, new apartments and Victorian era buildings.
It was in 1861 when sales of a housing estate began. The place is now the Parkville South. By 1868, more housing estates were established. Years after, the suburb became popular for the middle class who lived in terrace housing.
Transportation
Parkville has a railway station known as the Royal Park railway station. It is on the Upfield railway line, serviced by Metro Trains Melbourne.
