Ripponlea Suburb Profile
Situated 7 kilometers southeast of the Central Business District, the suburb of Ripponlea belongs to the local government area of the City of Port Philip. This small community situated between Elwood, Elstrenwick and East St Kilda has a population of only 1,576 as of 2016.
Named after the adjoining Rippon Lea Estate, the area was subdivided to form the current suburb after the death of the estate’s original owner Frederick Sargood in 1903. Sargood was a merchant and parliamentarian who named his estate after his mother, Emma Rippon.
Early structures constructed in the area include the Caulfield Grammar School’s senior school in 1909 and the television studios of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1954.
Lifestyle
Many young professionals had settled in the suburb in recent years. This has led to the rise in the cafe and fashion culture in the area.
In fact, one of the world’s top 50 restaurants is in Ripponlea. Known as Attica, this suburban dining place jumped to the 21st spot from 63 in 2012. The presence of Attica has also helped improve the suburb’s profile.
Meanwhile, the Glen Eira Road is the suburb’s shopping strip. Here, one can find popular dining places and fashion boutiques.
Housing
Ripponlea is dominated by classic homes featuring the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco styles. Californian bungalows also exist in the area.
Transportation
In terms of transportation, the suburb has its Ripponlea railways station that can be found on the Sandringham Line.
The tram is situated at Brighton Road while buses on Hotham Street also service the suburb.
