St Kilda Suburb Profile
Known as the bohemian seaside suburb, St Kilda is situated six kilometers south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. It has a population of 17,795 and is part of the local government are of the City of Port Philip.
This inner suburb’s name was taken from a schooner called Lady of St Kilda which moored at the main beach in 1841. Prior to that, the area was known by other names such as Green Knoll, Punk Town and The Village of Fareham.
The Kulin people were noted to be first settlers in the area for up to 40,000 years. The first European settler, meanwhile, was Benjamin Baxter around 1839.
St Kilda used to be the preferred suburb of Melbourne’s elite particularly during the Victoria and Edwardian eras. The place features palatial mansions along the waterfront such as Fitzroy Street, Grey Street and Acland Street, Alma Road and Chapel Stress as well as along the hills.
By the 1960s, St Kilda became popular for its bohemian culture and as home to artists, musicians, subcultures and the LGBT.
The area also had the highest population density in Melbourne for many years. This was evident in the housing which consisted mostly of strata titled units, apartments and flats including a single Housing Commission of Victoria tower. Other types of homes include Victorian terrace houses, Edwardian and interwar homes and apartments to post-war and modern infill development.
Tourist Attractions
St Kilda boasts of many attractions for both the young and old. The most popular is Luna Park, an amusement park known for its “Moonface” entry and historic scenic railway.
The Pier is another famous tourist attraction featuring a long breakwater and a little penguin colony. The St Kilda Pavilion in the area has been listed in the Victorian Heritage Register.
Another must-visit place is the St Kilda Sea Baths. This Moorish-themed building was originally built in the 1920s but was demolished in the 1990s. It was later rebuilt to resemble its original style but on a smaller scale.
Three main theatres exist in the suburb, each catering to a different niche. The National Theatre was built in 1920 and now hosts Beaux Arts performances. The Palais Theatre built in 1927 was originally designed as a cinema and now hosts live music and concerts. The Astor Theatre, on the other hand, is a modern/art deco style cinema constructed in 1935 featuring the largest screen in the southern hemisphere.
Transportation
The St Kilda railway line is part of route 96, one of the firrst light rail lines in Melbourne. The line ends at Acland Street. Other tram routes serving the area as the tram 12 and tram 16 which connect to the CBD.
Water transport is also available such as ferries and private boating. Cyclists can also use the Bayside Trail off-road bicycle network and the Copenhagen-style bicycle lane.
