Sunshine West Suburb Profile
Sunshine West is situated in the City of Brimbank, 13-16 kilometers east of Melbourne. With a population of 18,580 as of 2016, it is both a residential and industrial area.
Early settlers in the suburb were noted in the 1920s during the development of the Sunshine Heights Estate. It was, however, after the war when the area underwent further development. Sunshine West experienced rapid growth from the 1970s through the 1980s. Population slightly declined from the early 1990s when more housing was built in the area.
Today, the suburb is home to a diverse population. Residents include refugees and immigrant families from Asia, the Pacific and Europe.
Various important buildings a re now in place in Sunshine West. Some of these are the Sunshine Wisdom Lodge – Freemasons Victoria, West Sunshine Community Centre, Ainsworth Reserve, Buckingham Reserve, Norm Talintyre Reserve and the Australia Post Parcel Facility.
The suburb also has several places of worship. These are the Saint Leopold Mandić Croatian Catholic Church and Centre, Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church located on Glengala Road, Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Andrew located on St Andrew Street and Saint Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church on Armstrong Street.
Decent schools and local cafes are also nearby while the Central Business District can be easily reached via train. Buses serve the neighborhood as well.
