Tullamarine Suburb Profile
The suburb of Tullamarine is part of the cities of Brimbank, Hume and Moreland. Situated 15 kilometers north-west of the CBD, it has a population of 6,605 as of 2016.
The Melbourne airport is one of its main features. This is one of the reasons why the suburb was highly popular then for those working at the airport and first home buyers.
The suburb’s name was taken from a young member of the Wurundjeri, Tullamareena. It was later named Toolimen 40 years ago.
By 1842, the land in the Tullamarine Parish was subdivided into farm lots. Other infrastructures were later built such as the Wesleyan primary school (1855), Tullamarine post office (1859) and a hotel (1865).
Three leaders from Tullamarine were notable for their contributions to the area. They were Alec Rasmussen, Major Murphy and Leo Dineen. Alec Rasmussen was credited for purchasing the Melrose Drive Reserve and donating it to Council while Walter Murphy moved two war memorials. Leo Dineen was responsible for establishing various sporting clubs and facilities.
In the middle of the 1950s, the Tullamarine Village became an agricultural and residential township. A housing estate was then developed in 1984 with streets named after popular film studios such as Paramount and Forum.
Leisure Facilities
The suburb is home to several sports clubs. These include the Tullamarine Cricket Club (TCC) established in 1968-1969, Tullamarine Jets FC Soccer Club established in 2005, and the Tullamarine Tennis Club which has 200 members. It also has numerous parks and reserves as well as leisure centres. A great range of facilities to choose from including a wide selection of community services.
Industrial Area
As an industrial area, Tullamarine is home to some businesses and offices. Some of global aerospace businesses and a printing facility.
Commercial Area
A great selection of cafes and restaurants are nearby in Essendon, Niddrie, Moonee Ponds and surrounding areas. A new surf park, a large shopping centre (Westfield Airport West), smaller shopping centre (Gladstone Park) and many other shops are also a few minutes away.
Public Transport
Five public bus routes are now serving Tullamarine. The railway stations are situated in Broadmeadows and Jacana, both on the Craigieburn line. Other roads also provide access to residential homes, the city and airport. Take a look at the PTV website for further details.
