Several suburbs in Melbourne will have six new train stations a few years from now. Part of a major project called the Suburban Rail Loop, this public transportation is aimed at providing Victorians easy access to their place of work, schools and other amenities. It is worth $50 billion as confirmed by the Andrews government.
Premier Daniel Andrews announced last week that the 90-kilometer rail loop will run from Cheltenham to Werribee. The underground stations will be built in Burwood and Monash University in Clayton. There will be four new interchanges specifically at Cheltenham, Glen Waverly, Clayton and Box Hill.
Talks are set to take place with local government, universities and other major stakeholders to discuss the location of the new stations and the precincts involved. Many properties would have to be acquired for this project but Mr. Andrews said they still have to figure it out.
Once completed by its target year of 2022, the railway loop will be able to transport 400,000 passengers every day. It will also provide more than 20,000 jobs during construction including 2,000 apprentices, trainees and cadets who will be hired under the Major Projects Skills Guarantee program of the government.
The Suburban Rail Loop is considered the largest public transport project in the history of Victoria. It is the future of Melbourne’s transport network, according to Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan.
