Rising energy costs means energy efficient home designs remains a hot topic with home buyers.
If you’re building a new home you can focus on an energy efficient design from the get-go. And with changes to the National Construction Code pending, we can expect mandatory requirements for all new homes to be built to a seven star energy rating from next year.
But what are the features to look for in an existing home that make it an energy-efficient property to purchase?
- North-facing aspects and floor to ceiling windows are highly regarded because they invite warming winter sunshine while the sun is lower in the sky. In summer the sun is higher, so a north-facing aspect means less direct sun penetrating your windows during the hottest time of the day.
- Deciduous trees planted on northern boundaries provide summer shade and winter sunshine – a natural way to improve any home’s energy efficiency.
- Light coloured roofs absorb less heat in summer, and dark coloured floor coverings absorb more warmth from winter sunshine.
- Properties with solar panels, high-rated ceiling and wall insulation, double glazed windows and effective window coverings are all good choices when you’re looking for an energy efficient home.
