Every homeowner needs to be mindful of the regular maintenance that should be carried out as the cooler months approach. While spring cleaning usually occurs inside the home, autumn is the perfect time to get everything ship-shape outside the home, before winter hits.
Clean Gutters
Blocked gutters can cause extensive water damage to your home. If you live in a leafy area, check your gutters frequently throughout autumn. If your home doesn’t cop a lot of tree litter, your gutters could be cleared once or twice a year but especially in autumn.
Roofing Inspection
If you have a tiled roof it is a good idea to have a roof inspection done before winter. Roofs in poor condition can allow possums, rats and rain to enter the roof space, damaging insulation, structural beams and ceilings.
Colourbond roofs should also be checked for damage periodically but especially after storms, and if your home has an old iron roof keep an eye out for rust.
Test Smoke Alarms
Autumn is a good time to test smoke alarms. With winter on the way, homes are more at risk of fires caused by electric blankets, frypans, candles, heaters and clothes dryers.
Garden Maintenance
Late autumn is a good time to clean up the garden and ensure stormwater drains aren’t clogged with leaves before the winter rain comes. And pruning, dead-heading and removing dead growth during autumn helps your garden to prepare for spring growth after its winter hibernation.
Autumn home maintenance can be fun if you get the whole family involved!
