Melbourne rental providers are being hit with more change as a result of the Victorian Government’s rolling rental reforms. This time it is the new minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties that will be phased in from March 2027 – with suggestions that rental providers begin familiarising themselves with the new standards so they can become compliant.
These new standards cover heating, cooling, hot water, shower heads, ceiling insulation, and draught proofing. The upgrades can be implemented in accordance with specified triggers, such as a new tenancy or when an existing appliance needs replacing. There are exemptions for situations where compliance isn’t possible, and there are also discounts and rebates available to help lower the cost of the upgrades for rental providers.
Renters should expect their rental providers to advise them of the pending changes.
Both rental providers and renters can read more about the minimum energy efficiency standards on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website here.
