The Victorian government announced the introduction of more rental rules and regulations this week, effective from Tuesday 25th November.
The latest rental reform news informs the end of no fault evictions and rental bidding, and the introduction of a 90 day notice period for rental increases and notices to vacate. Also introduced is the requirement for all rental properties to meet minimum standards and the introduction of mandatory smoke alarm checks on an annual basis.
New rules also specify that landlords and agents must protect renters’ information from misuse and not disclose information without the renter’s consent.
One wonders why common-sense laws pertaining to information privacy, smoke alarm checks, minimum living standards and rental bidding haven’t been implemented before now, as one would expect. And while all laws that protect renters from irresponsible landlords or agents are welcomed, Victorian rental providers are yet to see any incentives to remain in or return to the Victorian property market.
