Concern regarding the consultation process surrounds the Allan government’s proposal to rezone suburbs on the eastern Suburban Railway Loop in order to facilitate the development of high density housing.
Proposals to develop multi-storey accommodation precincts in established eastern suburbs with railway stations have critics worried, with suggestions that new planning development laws mean consultation with councils and local residents will not occur.
Others are highly in favour of the proposal, saying the redevelopment of middle suburbs around east Melbourne suburban railway precincts is an exciting opportunity to create liveability in easily-accessible suburbs, similar to Collingwood and Fitzroy.
The government’s housing development strategy includes plans for 70% of new homes to be built in established suburbs, and 30% in growth areas on the city outskirts.
With 30-storey dwellings already a common sight in Box Hill, the proposal indicates similar skylines could be developed in Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley and Burwood.
