When you buy property in winter you really do see it laid bare… warts and all. A property that lacks mood-boosting adornments such as a blue-sky backdrop, living rooms drenched in golden sunlight and flourishing gardens bursting with colour doesn’t sway you with the pretty stuff.
What you will see are the flaws that may not be so noticeable on a sunny summer’s day, such as how much natural light and sun it does or doesn’t get in the winter months, how well insulated it is and how well the heating works, where the swampy drainage spots are in the garden, and if there are any cold draughts, water leaks or dampness.
You will also find less buyer competition during winter, with smaller numbers attending inspections and auctions. Couple that with the fact that homeowners choosing to sell in mid winter are usually highly motivated, and the bargaining power shifts strongly in your favour when you buy during winter.
