In a recent article in news.com.au, Wendy Chamberlain, Buyer’s Advocate with Chamberlain Property Advocates comments on ways people are getting into the property market. Wendy suggests that for some people, their dream suburb may be just out of reach, but there are other ways to reach a compromise. “Some buyers are better off being in the market, albeit not in their ‘forever home’, and then leveraging into another home, as home prices rise over time”, she said.
Another good tip from Wendy is to try and buy something with a bit of land or to look at homes in neighbouring suburbs from a desirable location. Check out the blog on our website about neighbouring suburbs for more information on why this could be a good strategy if you are looking to buy.
Meanwhile, some families are buying in their dream suburbs but spending millions on renovations. Wendy’s tip in a recent Chamberlain Property Advocates Newsletter reminds people looking to buy to consider what sort of house they are looking for and what will be suitable for their current needs and lifestyle.
“Are you looking for a new home off the plan or an established home? Are you looking for a home that has just been renovated or one that needs a renovation? Do you have the time to renovate? Do you have the skill? Do you have the knowledge? Do you have the patience to undertake a renovation? With renovations things can end up costing more than you thought they would originally, so that may not suit you”, says Wendy, about the questions people need to ask themselves before they start looking for their dream home.
“Have a think about what kind of home is really going to suit your lifestyle and how you like to live. If you would like to just buy a house, move in with your bags, drop them and start living, then that’s going to be the home that you need to look for. Alternatively, a renovation could be something that you can take on. Make sure you are buying the right home for your available time, skill set and funds”.
